About us

Traditional company since 1956

1956
It all started in 1956, when timber merchant Johann Tipotsch and his wife Aloisia opened Stumm's first café alongside five guest rooms with "running hot and cold water". At the same time, he initiated the first and only cinema in the entire valley, the "Ziller Lichtspiele, which offered 300 seats, thus creating a unique "movie café". Furthermore, the café boasted some juke boxes that attracted a lot of young people. It did not take long before the homemade cakes and grilled chicken – one of Loisi’s specialties – gained regional recognition and brought old and young from near and far.

1964
In 1964, a stroke of fate hit the family when Johann Tipotsch died and left Loisi a widow and a single mother to 18-year-old Waltraud and seven-year-old Heinz. From now on, the widow was at the helm of the business and extended it four years later.

1977/78
The biggest renovations to date happened in 1977/78, when the ski area Hochzillertal in Kaltenbach was opened. The hotel now comprised 25 rooms, all with ensuite shower/toilet as well as an à-la-carte restaurant with an antique dining room called “Tyrol”. The cinema was moved to the basement and reduced to 140 seats. In the following years the hotel was expanded to 31 rooms and a pizza kitchen; it was also equipped with an elevator. In 2015, the ground-floor and first-floor rooms have been refurbished with pine and fir wood, both of which make for a comfortable atmosphere. Thanks to the vicinity to the ski areas of Hochzillertal and Hochfügen the hotel is frequented by ski- and snowboarding enthusiasts throughout the winter months while in summer it is used by many as a base for hikes and Alpine adventures.

1980
After many years of dormancy, Stumm's theatre club was revived in 1980. Heinz Tipotsch took over his mother’s business in 1977 and offered the theatre club the movie theatre as their new home. Until the movie theatre was finally closed in 1989, it offered culture vultures a range of theatrical and cinematographic treats. The theatre hall offered the young hotel owner the chance, to combine his passion for acting with his job. Heinz was founding member and chairman of Stumm’s theatre club. Additionally, he acted as chairman for the association of theatre clubs in the Zillertal for many years.

Since 2000
Since the year 2000, guests have the chance to experience a culinary and theatrical treat. With the introduction of the so-called theatre menu, guests were offered yet another novelty that cannot be found anywhere else. They are treated to a multi-course “theatre gala menu” with a theatre show added between main course and dessert. For day visitors, this menu is also available at lunch or with coffee and cake instead of an entire meal.

Performing host
The idea for this concept was born when Heinz Tipotsch took part at the summer street theatre days alongside actor Helmut Wlasak and actresses Franziska Grinzinger and Stella Ita. Together with these three he performed a play by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy (1801 – 1862). In the meantime, the programme has grown to include various plays performed by different actors.

2006
In 2006, Stumm’s first original café was renovated to become what is now the Café-Bistro kimm (opened daily from 07.00 AM to 11.00 PM). As was the case in the past, the Tipotsch family still strongly identifies with the term “cosy coffee culture”. The café has been extended to include the Ezeb-Brot-Ladl, a bakery, which is selling freshly baked goods seven days a week. This means that since 2006, at the Hotel Tipotsch you can expect great service 365 days a year, with the kitchen open from 12.00 PM to 09.00 PM.

Culinary delights
The culinary and cultural experience at "Tiatta" can be booked for groups of 30 to 140 people, either via a travel agency or upon request. The group programme at Hotel Tipotsch runs from April to December; it is varied and in tune with the seasons. Apart from the theatre menu you have a choice of music performances, rustic buffets and guided hikes.

Since 2006
Simon’s sister Anna has been actively involved in the business since 2006 and manages both the Restaurant Tiatta and the café Kimm. Simon’s best friend Tamara has known the Hotel Tipotsch from an early age and today she is in charge of the administrative side and marketing.

Today
“The Tipotsch“, now offering 46 rooms, is still run as a family business. After the extended dining room, the comfortable deluxe- and panoramic rooms as well as the six generous suites on the second and third floor have been completely overhauled/newly added in 2019, Simon Tipotsch took over the hotel’s leadership from his father. The family still supports him: Dad Heinz is at this side whenever questions arise while mum Margot manages the business in the mornings and spoils the guests with delicious breakfast treats. While her husband is strongly involved in the performing arts, Margot herself is a sculptor. Find out more about her unique pieces of art here.

More than 15 highly motivated staff support the successful family and do their best to make your stay – both at the Hotel Tipotsch and the Restaurant Tiatta – memorable. And, what’s best ... you can still enjoy “Strudel” and home-made bread prepared according to grandma Loisi’s recipes.
